A newborn’s skin
Silky, incredibly smooth, and firm… these are the characteristics of babies’ skin, due to its young, still-developing structure.
This delicate skin needs special care, as its histological and physiological characteristics differ from those of adult skin:
The stratum corneum is 4 to 5 times thinner, making the skin softer and more velvety but also more permeable and sensitive to external factors. The underlying dermis is thinner too, with smaller, immature collagen and elastin fibres.
In the basal layer of the epidermis, melanocytes, which are responsible for producing melanin, are present in lower numbers.
This means the skin has less natural protection against ultraviolet rays, making it more exposed and sensitive. That is why it is important to protect it from the very first months.
The sebaceous glands are only minimally active, which means a newborn’s skin is naturally odourless; this remains the case until puberty. The lipid composition of the skin’s surface also differs from that of adult skin: it is lower in quantity and different in quality, with a protective function that is still developing.
A newborn’s skin has a higher water content, around 75%, which gives it a particularly soft and elastic texture.
At the same time, this high level of hydration makes it more permeable and reactive to external stimuli, with a still-limited ability to retain water and regulate its moisture balance over time.
A newborn’s skin pH is slightly less acidic than an adult’s, due to the absence of the protective acid mantle.
This makes the skin more vulnerable not only to germs but also to external irritants. Over time, the pH tends to stabilise but in the first months it is important to protect it with gentle products.
Its highly developed sensory perception allows babies to feel changes in temperature and enjoy the calming effect of their mother’s warm hands.
